And the WhatsApp groups are full of stipend screenshots from BCG and Goldman Sachs.

What is the Difference Between Articleship and Industrial Training?

Before comparing, let us get the definitions right. Many students confuse the two or use the terms interchangeably. They are related but distinct.

The Core Difference — What You Actually Do Every Day

The biggest difference between articleship and industrial training is not the stipend or the brand name. It is what you actually spend your time doing at work.

In CA Firm ArticleshipIn CA Industrial Training
Work across multiple clients in different industriesWork on one company’s internal finance operations
Audit procedures, checklists, working papersMonth-end closing, MIS reports, budget variance analysis
Filing ITRs, GST returns, ROC formsTreasury management, FP&A, internal controls
Client-facing interactions and negotiationsCross-functional collaboration with business teams
Principal reviews your work regularlyFinance manager or CA-in-charge guides you
CA Final subjects are directly relevant to daily workCorporate processes may not align directly with exam syllabus

Neither is better in absolute terms. A student doing audit at a Big 4 firm and a student doing FP&A at HUL are both getting excellent training — just for different careers. Read our post on CA industrial training advantages and disadvantages for a deeper look at the trade-offs.

Stipend Comparison — What You Actually Earn

This is where industrial training has the most obvious advantage. The difference in pay compared to CA firm articleship can be substantial, especially at top companies.

Training TypeFirm or CompanyTypical Monthly Stipend
CA Firm ArticleshipBig 4 (Deloitte, EY, PwC, KPMG)Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000
CA Firm ArticleshipLarge Indian firmsRs 6,000 to Rs 15,000
CA Firm ArticleshipMid-size firmsRs 3,000 to Rs 10,000
CA Industrial TrainingBCGRs 1,50,000

CA Industrial TrainingMondelez, HUL, ITCRs 20,000 to Rs 40,000
CA Industrial TrainingMid-size companiesRs 15,000 to Rs 22,000

The stipend gap is real and significant. But before you decide purely on money, read the next two sections carefully.

CA Final Preparation — The Most Honest Comparison

This is the part most guides skip over, but it is the most important factor for many students.

CA Final is the hardest exam in the CA journey. How your training affects your preparation time and quality should be a central factor in your decision — not an afterthought.

FactorCA Firm ArticleshipCA Industrial Training
Study leave entitlementAs per ICAI Regulation 65Same rules apply
Actual study flexibilityVaries by firm cultureStricter office hours at most companies
Syllabus overlap with daily workHigh — audit, tax, Ind AS directly relevantLower — corporate processes differ from exam questions
Peer learning environmentArticles around you are all preparing togetherColleagues are not CA students
Self-discipline requiredModerateVery high

The honest reality: students who do industrial training at demanding companies like Goldman Sachs or BCG need to be exceptionally disciplined about CA Final preparation. The work is engaging, the hours are real, and you are surrounded by non-CA colleagues who are not preparing for any exam.

That does not mean you cannot clear CA Final during industrial training — thousands of students do. But going in with clear eyes about this trade-off matters. Read our guide on making the most of your articleship for practical tips on balancing work and CA Final prep.

Also make sure you are aware of the mandatory ICAI E-Diary requirement for students starting training from January 2026 onwards. Read the full guide on ICAI E-Diary for articleship from January 2026.

FAQs

Can I go back to a CA firm after starting industrial training?

Not easily. Once you register Form 104 and begin industrial training at an approved company, returning to a CA firm mid-way requires specific ICAI approval. Make sure you are certain before making the switch.

Does industrial training count as part of my three-year articleship?

Yes. Industrial training replaces the final 9 to 12 months of your three-year articleship. It is not an additional requirement on top of articleship.

Can I do industrial training if I have cleared only one group of CA Inter?

Technically yes, as long as you meet the minimum two years of articleship requirement. However, most competitive companies require both groups cleared. You may be limited to smaller companies if only one group is cleared.

What is the minimum stipend for CA industrial training in 2026?

As per ICAI’s revised rules effective from January 1, 2026, the minimum stipend for industrial trainees is Rs 15,000 per month. Most top companies pay significantly above this. Read the full update: ICAI revised industrial training rules 2026.

Is industrial training available in smaller cities?

Rarely. Most industrial training opportunities are concentrated in Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bangalore, Pune, and Chennai. Students in smaller cities typically need to be willing to relocate to access quality IT opportunities.

What happens to my CA Final study leave during industrial training?

The same ICAI study leave rules under Regulation 65 apply during industrial training as during articleship. In practice, corporate environments can be stricter about leave compared to smaller CA firms. Always clarify this with the company before joining.
